The Peachtree Road Race Wheelchair Division 10K
Road Race
sponsored by Atlanta's Shepherd Center is one of America's
premier Able-boded and Disabled road races. This 10K which
starts bright and early (Check Race WEB Site for specific time,
usually before 7AM)
is currently the US's largest Disabled and Able-bodied 10K. Usually drawing
approximately 55,000 runners and 75 to 120 wheelchairs.
The race starts with a 2.5 mile flat and downhill run
before reaching heartbreak hill. The approximately 3/4
mile hill usually separated the leaders from the pack. The
finish is a long 1 mile downhill which drastically favors
the racers who can coast the best. Many a leader with
hundreds of yards of a lead has lost at the tape. There
are Open Men, Open Women, combined Master, Open Quad,
combined T1 and a combined Male and Female Junior
divisions. Following the race there is an award luncheon
for all athletes and guests at the Shepherd Center.

Wheelchair Race Rating |
5 - Great race management, Respect for the
wheelchair
athletes, reasonable prize money, and a killer hill. The
course is fast due to long downhill's. Spectators need to
chose where to view the race; the start, at the Shepard
Center at Heart Break hill, or at the finish. The after
race award luncheon is excellent and fun for both athletes
and guests. There are many hotels that host athletes but
most chairs stay at the Embassy Suites on Peachtree Road.
If you are coming to Peachtree you should consider signing
up for the other Georgia events surrounding Peachtree in
the World Series.
DO Not
Plan on not
leaving Georgia until July
5th so you can come to the giant fireworks display at the
Lenox Center on July 4th. |
