Terry Tierney:
To All Tri-State Members & Friends of Tri-State:
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of our own,
Terry Tierney, on Friday, October 9, 2009. Beloved daughter of the late
James and Theresa. Terry was born in 1950 and loving sister of Denis
Tierney, Maureen Tierney-Brennan, sister-in-law of John Brennan. Also
survived by her dear nephews John and James Brennan.
Terry was a key member of TSWAA for close to twenty years. While as member
of the Board of Directors, she served as chairperson, vice-chairperson,
treasurer and a member-at-large. Terry also served for many years as a
TSWAA official, and received her IPC certification in 2008. On a national
basis, she also served a term as Treasurer for Wheelchair Sports, USA and
served as an official in a number of National Junior Disability
Championships
Terry was a champion for the rights of the disabled athlete and she will be
sorely missed by those who worked with her. She was always ready and
willing to “roll her sleeves up” in order to help our organization. Her
dedication to TSWAA and disabled sports is reflected in her being awarded
both the Bob McShane and Legacy Awards.
As many of you already know, Terry was not just an official/administrator,
she was a participative athlete. Notably, she was a member of the 1999 Pan
American Wheelchair Table Tennis Championships in Mexico City. Terry also
won a Team Bronze Medal in doubles (along with Carolynne Bethka) at the
2003 US Open Paralympic Table Tennis Tournament in Colorado Springs. She
was a recipient of the 2007 George Chranewycz Memorial Award presented by
the American Wheelchair Table Tennis Association (AWTTA). She competed in
numerous nationals and regional competitions.
